CARE OF LIBRARY RESOURCES
Taking care of library resources is crucial to ensure the longevity and availability of materials for all users. It is essential to use and handle these resources with care to maintain their quality and usefulness for everyone. The library resources primarily include books, computers, and electronic resources, all of which require specific treatment to ensure they can be enjoyed by patrons for years to come.
Handling Physical Books:
- When handling books, make sure your hands are clean and dry to prevent staining the pages.
- Turn pages carefully from the corners to avoid tearing them.
- Avoid folding of page corners.
- Avoid writing or highlighting in library books to preserve their value for others.
- Keep books away from water or damp environments to prevent mold growth.
- Report any damage noted in a book to librarians to have it repaired or replaced.
Caring for Computers:
- Keep food and drinks away from the computer to prevent spills and crumbs from causing damage.
- Always shut down the computer properly using the designated shutdown option.
- Do not unplug cables or turn off power buttons abruptly, as it can cause data loss.
- Inform library staff if you encounter any issues with the computer to prevent further damage.
Handling Electronic Resources:
- Respect all rules and guidelines for using electronic resources within the library.
- Do not download or access unauthorized content that may compromise the library's security.
- Be mindful of your online activities to ensure a safe and respectful environment for all users.
- Avoid sharing personal login information with others to protect your account and data.
- Log out of any accounts or platforms after use to prevent unauthorized access.
- Report any suspicious activities or security breaches to library staff immediately.
- Adhere to copyright laws when using electronic resources to avoid any legal issues.
- Do not share or distribute copyrighted materials without permission from the owner.
- Cite all sources appropriately when using information from electronic resources to give credit to the original creators.
Loan periods
Reserve books: One week
Ordinary books
- Students: two weeks
- Staff and board members: four weeks
- Alumni: two weeks
Extended loans: Core text for some courses must be renewed monthly
Circulation
- Reference books may be used in the Library only. These are marked ®.
- Books may not be renewed.
- All items may be subject to recall by the librarian.
- Users will be held responsible for any loss or damage to items while in their charge and shall be required to pay the full replacement value of damaged or lost items and a processing fee.
- Damage includes physical damage, marking, underlining or writing in books.
- All users are requested to inform the library of any change in their contact details.
- Users who fail to return books shall be debited for the full value of the book and a processing fee of 20%.
- Users who share their borrowing privileges with others, and those who borrow in this way will be penalized.
- Users who check out books from the library without following the right procedures will be penalized.
Students
- Every student must register with the library every term by checking the accuracy and currency of their registration details. New students should complete a library registration form.
- All students should attend a library orientation session within a week of their first registration.
- A student who is found guilty of theft, attempted theft, or mutilation of library property shall be subject to the procedures laid down in the rules of student discipline. All students are required to be familiar with the penalties which will be imposed for infringement of library regulations.
- All books must be returned, and fines etc. must be paid before the release of examination results or graduation certificates.
Fines
- These penalties apply to all users.
- Reserve books: $5.00 per day.
- Ordinary books: $2.00 per item, per day
- Extended loans: $2.00 per item, per day
- Fines for overdue items are charged daily including weekends and public holidays.
- Library materials will not be issued to users who have outstanding fines or overdue books.
Personal conduct
- Silence shall be always maintained in the library. A charge of $5.00 will be levied on every infringement of this rule.
- Users are requested not to replace items on the shelves. Please leave them on the tables or the basket provided.
- Cell phones shall be switched off before entry into the library. A charge of $5.00 will be levied on every infringement of this rule.
- Smoking or the consumption of food or drink in the library is forbidden.
- No user shall mark or deface any item of library property.
- No item may be removed from the library before being properly issued.
- All bags, cases, etc. must be deposited in the lockers before entering the library.
- Library defaulters shall be subject to the suspension of their library privileges.
